Florence nightlife for the young traveler

One of the best parts of traveling in Europe, Italy especially, might just be the nightlife for those of us who love meeting new people, dancing, and staying out until dawn (me). Nightlife in Italy can take many different forms, so there’s really something for everyone. Jazz clubs, bars, pubs, and clubs abound for entertainment that will keep you up until the sun is rising. You may find espresso cups littered on the street at two a.m. and think to yourself, that’s how they do it.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed alternative to the options below, take advantage of Italy’s laissez-faire open container policy and head to the nearest piazza or riverbank with your friends and a bottle of wine. This is also one of the best ways to start your night–viewing sunset from a treasured spot in the city and sharing a bottle of vino picked up from the nearest Carrefour or Conad (did I mention the ability to buy a two euro bottle of wine at the grocery store is another reason I love Italy so much?). La bella vita.

JAZZ

Live music is something I love but harder to find in the states, so I took advantage of all of the jazz establishments while I was abroad. I will definitely be returning to at least one of these spots when I’m back in January! Make sure you check the schedule for what nights each of these places have their jazz.

Rex Via Fiesolana, 25R

Rex is a really cool bar that has jazz on Tuesday nights. It has its own unique vibe and crowd, and the drinks are really well-made. I could sit and watch the bartenders shake martinis up all night!

Florence Jazz Club Via Nuova de’ Caccini, 3

This is a members-only club, but have no fear because membership costs a mere six euros and includes a free drink. You won’t regret joining this club!!! Be conscious of the noise level when you’re on your way in and out, since this establishment is located underground in a quiet neighborhood.

La Ménagère Via de’ Ginori, 8L

This spot is also on the list as one of my favorite cafes, and sadly I never made it to their jazz nights. But I have seen the space in their lower level, and it has the same sophisticated yet eclectic look that the upstairs of La Menag does so well. I’ve heard their jazz nights are amazing.

BARS // PUBS

There are a myriad of bars and pubs in the city, but these are the ones I found myself at most often.

Red Garter Via de’ Benci, 33R

This bar is in Santa Croce, one of the best areas of the city if you’re looking for a fun night out. This bar is deceivingly big, with a two-level karaoke area in the back. It’s a fun first stop.

Atlantic Pub Piazza del Mercato Centrale, 44R

A super American pub (not too many locals usually) but so much fun! The bar area often turns into a dance floor and it’s a really good time. They often have deals for students, so check their facebook for special events throughout the week.

Beer House Club Corso dei Tintori, 34

A good place for a beer (obviously), or a few shots on your way to the club.

The Lion’s Fountain Borgo degli Albizi, 34

Another good spot if you’re looking for Americans to party with. It is also the place to find green beer on Saint Patrick’s Day if you’re so inclined. If you’d like to know, I opted for a spritz instead (but I’m not much of a beer drinker).

Antico Caffè del Moro – Art Bar Firenze Via del Moro, 4

Kate Middleton studied in Florence during university, and she frequented the Art Bar. Naturally, I had to go there on my birthday for after-dinner drinks. It’s a sophisticated spot (no wonder the Duchess liked it) and the drinks are next level. Garnishes in the form of fruit sculptures or chocolate, depending on your drink choice.

CLUBS

Vuoi andare in discoteca!? I loved going to clubs because I love to dance, and you never know who you’ll meet there! They’re typically open until four a.m., so they’re the best last stop for the night.

Space Club Via Palazzuolo, 37

Maybe my favorite club in Florence. Go on Wednesday nights (or check their website for events). Watch your personal belongings…my phone got stolen here. And don’t forget to hold onto your ticket when you get in, as you’ll need it to exit or you’ll pay a steep fine.

Full Up Club Via della Vigna Vecchia, 23R

A really fun club if you’re looking to dance. Someone’s always leading a line dance, and the cover charge is usually pretty inexpensive, less than the ten euros for Space. There’s a really good mix of locals and students (an Italian friend brought me here).

YAB Discoteca Firenze Via dei Sassetti, 5

Another club popular with students and Italians. It’s fancier than Space with a younger crowd. Not for the claustrophobic as it gets crowded and the ceilings are low.

Bamboo Lounge & Club Via Giuseppe Verdi, 57R

A smaller club and another favorite of mine. The crowd is usually a little older but if you go with all your friends you can easily spend hours dancing together and not have to pay too much for drinks.
