Nisswa travel guide

I know I probably say this every year, but this summer went by especially fast. I don’t know if the cold weather in June is to blame or the fact that I was stuck inside all day at a 9-5, but this season was truly fleeting. I’m not too mad about that, though, because summer might just be my least favorite season. However, there is always one week I can count on every year to experience summer to the fullest (and actually enjoy it), and it is the one I spend up north at my aunt and uncle’s cabin.

Going ‘up north’ is a very Minnesotan tradition of escaping the city and heading to cooler weather by a lake of your choosing. It’s typically done in the summer, and involves boating, tubing, endless time spent in the water, posting up at the sandbar, and roaring bonfires and stargazing to end the day. By the end of the week I’m tan and my face is full of freckles and I feel supremely relaxed. It’s always how I measure the years too, the time to reset my calendar and life, and reconnect with my family over what’s to come in the next year.

at a glance

Nisswa is located just North of Brainerd and Baxter, and is home to the Gull Lake Chain. Being at the cabin is about being in the sun all day and then relaxing each night. Nearby cabin towns include Pequot and Cross Lake, and the Whitefish Chain is just further up 371.

things to do

places to eat

BREAKFAST

Stonehouse Coffee and Roastery: the best scones in the world, and the iced soy latte I wait for all year. Perfect for breakfast before shopping.

The Iron Waffle Coffee Company: their waffles are made from a different batter than normal waffles, and it makes all the difference. The lodge is cute and they added more outdoor seating this year.

LUNCH/DINNER

Zorbaz: zerving pizza and mexican food sinze 1969. Our favorite place to boat up to, and dogz are welcome az well!

Sherwood Forest: always a unique menu here, in a rustic setting amidst the tall pines of Sherwood Forest.

Bar Harbor Supper Club: the decor alone here draws me in, but thankfully the menu is just as appealing. Pack a nicer outfit if you choose to sit inside, and enjoy a memorable meal with your loved ones!

Rafferty’s Pizza: they claim to be the top 50 pizza in the world, though I have no idea on which list they are referring to…nevertheless, Rafferty’s makes a good pie and we usually visit once a year.

The Dock Bar & Grill at Quarterdeck on Gull: a new favorite because they have a build your own bruschetta appetizer that fed our group of 7. Plus the walleye sandwich was fresh and delicious, and you can’t beat a spot on Gull Lake that’s boat accessible.

Grandview Lodge: they took away my favorite spot, Italian Gardens, which used to be housed in a small yellow cottage on the property. They’ve got other options, though, and I love being able to walk around after dinner. They’re something so magical and iconic about this classic resort.

Mission Point at Madden’s: another classic Minnesota resort, this one feels a little flashier than its counterparts. We tried this restaurant for the first time and had a really delicious meal (mostly because my dad gave me all of his truffle mashed potatoes). The views were beautiful, since it’s located right on the water with almost-180 degree windows overlooking Gull Lake.

etc.

Chocolate Ox: for candy, ice cream, and old fashioned soda.

Mini Donut stand: operates in downtown Nisswa on the weekends, if you need extra shopping fuel.

Dairy Queen and A&W: classic options for ice cream or a float, also located right downtown.

Special things to pack:

  • Sunscreen/bug spray
  • Life jacket
  • Pants (for avoiding mosquitoes at night)
  • Sweatshirt (always bring it on the boat, even if you think you’ll be warm enough without it)
  • Towels
  • Cooler and tumblers (to keep drinks cool on the boat)
